Own Your Data OYD and Kybernos are working together to establish a data space around distributed Digital Product Passports for value chains in the food sector. The central challenges are food waste, establishment of the circular economy and the effective elimination of information and thus power imbalances between producers, trade intermediaries and consumers.
“FOOD HINTERLAND SYSTEM HAS BEEN SELECTED AS ONE OF THE BRIGHTEST PROJECTS FOR MINTING DIGITAL HUMANISM AS LEADING CONCEPT FOR DIGITALISATION IN VIENNA AND BEYOND”
The self-determination of consumers with regard to the establishment of conscious consumption patterns requires the completeness and credibility of all information about the food offered on the market that is relevant for decision-making. Despite all the regulations, this completeness still does not exist in the food sector; there is a systemic information asymmetry and, as a result, observable market failure in the form of a significant waste of resources. The market cannot effectively fulfil its coordination function with regard to resource-saving behaviour.
For a conscious society, the effective integration of consumers and their needs in the competition of supply chains is absolutely necessary. The Food Hinterland System project can help the City of Vienna to develop a positive narrative with regard to existing conscious consumption patterns and city-owned production as well as its procurement activities. Vienna can thus position itself even more effectively in the megatrend towards conscious consumption as metropolis with its own digitally cultivated food hinterland.
